2016: FIRST® Stronghold-Brik

The Game: FIRST® Stronghold

FIRST® Stronghold is a medieval-themed game designed for the 2016 FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC). It is played by two alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete simultaneously to score points by breaching obstacles, such as the Cheval De Frise, the Portcullis, the tower, and the Rock Wall. Each obstacle had a different requirement for the robot to be able to disarm it. For each obstacle, the robot or alliance robot has to breach the obstacle twice to completely disarm it and gain points for the team. Another way for an alliance to gain points would be to score in the high or low goal of the tower. The robot would score into the high goal by catapulting a boulder, or foam dodge ball, up through the top of the tower. A low goal could be scored by the robot pushing a boulder into the lower goal of the tower. At the end of each match, if your robot could climb the tower, which is done by latching onto a bar below the high goal, you could score more points for your alliance. If you are successful in doing so, you have “captured” the tower.

The Robot: Brik

The Results

Even though Brik did not do what we had originally planned in the 2016 season, our team was still able to improvise a new strategy for our robot. We used many of our robot’s features in order to create a strong and defensive robot. In the Wisconsin Regional, Brik was able to use these defensive strategies to place 2nd out of more than 50 robots. At the Wisconsin Regional we had the honor of receiving the Chairman’s Award, along with the Gracious Professionalism award, which we won at the Rock City Regional. We hope to do even better in the 2017 season!
