2010: Breakaway – Das Boot
The Game: Breakaway
BREAKAWAY was a soccer inspired game. Two Alliances, one red and one blue, composed of three teams each, competed in each match. The object of the game was to attain a higher score than your opponent by shooting soccer balls into goals and then by climbing on the alliance tower or platform or by lifting an alliance robot off the field. The field was divided into three zones by “bumps”, or elevated platforms. Human players could return scored soccer balls into game play. As in traditional soccer matches, robots could not possess more than one soccer ball or they received a penalty.
The Robot: Das Boot
Das Boot, currently the oldest robot we still have, was inspired by a soccer player kicking a soccer ball. It was powered by three steel springs with a variable tensioner. It was primed by a large piston and armed with a steel latch ready to fire at a moment’s notice. The triangles on the side of the robot were used to tip the bot right side up as if it were to roll over.
